SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Kathryn Kirk (Lititz, Pa.) tallied a goal with less than 10 minutes remaining to push the game to overtime, but the ninth-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team fell, 2-1, in the extra stanza to No. 8 Syracuse Friday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Orange 10-8 and had two more corner attempts.

Six minutes into overtime, Syracuse garnered a corner attempt, but Amy Kee's shot attempt went wide. On ODU's very next possession, the Lady Monarchs gained a corner and put a shot on goal, but SU goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded her fourth save of the game to keep the contest knotted at one.

The Lady Monarchs kept the pressure on as sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md) blasted a shot in the 80th minute of play, but Stiver made another save. On the Orange's next possession, ODU's goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made a critical save on another shot from Kee.

With just over a minute before the overtime session ended, SU's Lindsay Conrad scored the golden goal off a pass from Maggie Befort. The win improves Syracuse to 4-1 on the year, while the Lady Monarchs dropped their third straight to fall to 2-3. ODU has lost back-to-back games by a lone goal to Top 10 teams.

Syracuse netted the only goal in the first half of play as Shelby Schraden tallied her fourth goal of the season.Old Dominion's first half attack was paced by Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.), who had three of the ODU's four shots in the opening frame. However, the junior could only get one shot-on-goal and the Lady Monarchs were held scoreless in the half.

With the goalkeepers and defenses dominating much of the second half, goals were extremely hard to come by. However, Old Dominion came through with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game as Kirk scored her third goal of the season off a pass from Hatch. The game remained tied at one as the teams went into overtime.

ODU outshot Syracuse 8-5 in regulation and had eight corners to only four for the Orange. Syracuse only got two shots-on-goal in regulation.

Old Dominion will play again tomorrow at J.S. Coyne Stadium, taking on No. 7 Michigan State at 2 p.m.
