NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams announced their 2009-10 schedule on Tuesday. The slate featured four home meets along with trips to the Gamecock and Navy Invitationals.
The season gets underway with the annual Blue/Gray Intersquad meet on October 3rd, while the dual meet portion of the schedule kicks off with a home meet with the College of Charleston on Family/Alumni Weekend.
The schedule features six meetings with Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) squads. The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs travel to UNC-Wilmington on October 24th. On November 6th and 7th, ODU will host Drexel and William & Mary, along with the women competing against James Madison and Northeastern. The squad will also travel to George Mason on January 23rd in a quad meet with the Patriots, American, and Army.
Other dual meets in 2009-10 include George Washington on December 5th in Washington D.C. and a home meet with East Carolina and UMBC on January 16th.
In addition to their dual meets, the Monarchs and Lady Monarchs will participate in the second annual Gamecock Invitational at the University of South Carolina November 19th-21st and gear up for the CAA Championships at the Navy Invitational. The field for the Gamecock Invitational is yet to be announced, while the Navy Invitational will feature competition from not only the Midshipmen, but Virginia, American, Bucknell, and Lafayette.
The CAA Championships will take place February 24-27th at the Jim McKay Natatorium at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The Old Dominion women's swimming and diving teams finished the 2008-09 season with a 9-7 overall record. The Lady Monarchs finished seventh at the CAA Championships, brining home five individual and a pair of relay All-CAA awards. Among the Lady Monarchs returning to the pool this season include 2008 Icelandic Olympian Erla Dogg Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), an All-CAA performer in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 200 and 400 medley relays, 100 backstroke champion April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), and ODU's 100 butterfly record holder Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland).
The Old Dominion men's swimming and diving team finished the 2008-09 season with a 10-1 overall mark and finished second at the CAA Championships, earning a total of 13 all-conference honors. The Monarchs have compiled a 22-1 mark over the last two seasons. Returning for the Monarchs this season include 2008 CAA Swimmer and Rookie of the Year Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland), 13-time All-CAA honoree Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden), and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.), Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.), and Mikael Ramkvist, (Bajarred, Sweden) members of ODU's record breaking relay teams.
