RICHMOND, VA.-- The ODU Baseball Monarchs (20-23/12-9) pounded out 28 hits, including a school record 13 doubles to defeat VCU, 28-9 Sunday afternoon.ODU holds on to a share of second place with Georgia State, both have 12-9 CAA records.
The 28 hits is the second most in school history. Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) led ODU with a career high six RBI, five hits and five runs scored. He had two doubles and a triple on the day. Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.), Brett Harris (Chesapeake, VA.) and Cameron Scott (Culpeper, VA.) each knocked in four runs, while Chris Buss (Rosemont, MN.) and Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) both knocked in three runs.
Buss and Max Most (Port Washington, NY.) scored four runs each, while Buss and Most both had three hits. Cameron Scott led all hitters with three doubles. Josh Wright also slammed his team leading ninth home run of the season.
ODU got on the scoreboard first as Brett Harris (Virginia Beach, VA.) singled home Gerard Hall, and Jake McAloose. VCU came back in the bottom of thefirst with two outs with a Justin Wright two-run homer.
In the second, ODU took the lead for good on RBI hits from Chris Buss, Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico), and Jake McAloose. Josh Wright also got an RBIwith a sacrifice fly. In the third Gerard Hall singled home Chris Buss.
In the fourth VCU scored two runs with Joe Van Meter hitting a solo homer, andCarlos Rodriguez doubling home Brent Mikionis.
The Monarchs blew the game open when they exploded for six runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and seven in the seventh innings.
Freshman Ben Tomchick(Virginia Beach, VA.) picked up his fourth win of the season with seven strikeouts, three walks and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The Rams were led by Justin Wright and Joe Van Meter with two RBI each. Andrew Dimino, Doug Otto, Van Meter and Justin Wright each had two hits. Van Meter alsohit a homer for the Rams.
The previous ODU team record of 12 doubles was against Iona on March 3, 2007. The school record for hits is 30 in a game in 2000 against Norfolk State.McAloose fell one run shy of the school record of six runs scored in a game held by ODU Hall of Fame first baseman Sean O'Hare in 1985 against Central Connecticut,while Josh Wright tied O'Hare's record for the most at bats in a game with seven.
The school record for runs scored in a game is 35 against George Mason in 1985, followed by 34 against Cenral Connecticut State in 1985, 31 against NorfolkState in 200, 30 against Jacksonville in 1983 and 29 against Liberty in 2002.
The Monarchs host Richmond Tuesday at 6 p.m., then host UNC Wilmington in the final CAA regular season series, beginning Thursday.
