NORFOLK, VA--The Old Dominion Monarchs pounded out 14 hits along with the five-hit pitchingof freshman Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, Va. )to defeat Maryland Tuesday night, 10-6. Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va. ) and Cameron Scott (Culpeper, Va. ) each knocked in three runs for ODU. It's the Monarchs second straight win as they improve to 5-10, while Maryland is 8-9.
Tomchick (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched seven innings allowing just five hits, one run and five strikeoutsfor his first collegiate victory.
ODU took a 3-0 lead in the first as Corsner, freshman Brett Harris (Chesapeake, Va) and Josh Wright (Bridgewater, Va. ) each knocked in a run. In the third inning Cameron Scott tripled in two of ODU's three runs and Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico) singled in the other for a 6-0 lead.
Maryland threatened in the top of the ninth with five runs led by a two-run single by Mike Moss. Senior lefthander Matt Walls (Hope, ND. )came on in the ninth and got the next two batters to fly out for his first save of the year.
Junior outfielder Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) led ODU with three hits on the day and Jake McAloose(Virginia Beach, Va. ) led the team with three runs scored. Beside Hall's three hits, McAloose, Corsner, Harris, Scott and Josh Wright each had two hits on the night.
Maryland was led by A.J. Casario, David Poutier and Curtis Lazar with two hits each. ODU and Maryland will play again Wednesday night in College Park at 6 p.m.
