GREENSBORO, NC--The Spartans of UNC Greensboro defeated Old Dominion, 4-1 Wednesday. ODU drops to 3-10, while UNCG is 2-8.Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) knocked in the Monarchs lone run in the eighth inning with a double that scored Gerard Hall(Washington, DC.). second baseman Chris Buss (Rosemont, MN.) led ODU with three hits on the day.
The Spartans were led by Ed Jayjack with two RBI, while Corey Overholtzer and Ray Quinoneseach knocked in a run. Jayjack hit a solo homer in the second inning that put UNCG up, 1-0.
UNCG used four pitchers to shut down the Monarchs. Warren Slack picked up the win, goingFive-plus inning of work without allowing a run. Greg Smith came on in the eighth and finishedThe game to pick up his first save of the year.
ODU freshman Ben Tomchick pitched six innings allowing only one run.
Through 13 games, Jake McAloose leads the team with a .408 batting average and11 runs scored. He has also knocked in 10 runs. Donnie Corsner leads the teamwith 11 RBI and has a .333 batting average. Cameron Scott leads the team in stolenbases with nine, while freshman Ben Tomchick has a 1.86 ERA.
The Monarchs return home to host Fairleigh Dickinson in a three-game weekend series beginningFriday at 6 p.m.
