LEXINGTON, VA--Jacob Morley's single in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Justin Toppingwith one out as the Keydet of VMI defeated the Old Dominion University Monarchs, 4-3 . ODUis now 2-3 on the season.
The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Brett Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) singled home Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.), who started the inning off with a double. Austin Wright then dropped a bunt down which plated Cameron Scott (Culpeper, Va.).
In the eighth inning sophomore catcher Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD.) singled to centerfield to score junior shortstop Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead.
Hall led ODU with two of their seven hits on the day. Jacob Morley led VMI with three hits andTwo runs batted in.
VMI tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and third, Justin Toppinghit into a double play allowing pinchrunner David Lottman to score from third.
Travis Smink picked up the win in relief for the Keydets, while Gerard Hall, ODU's starting shortstoppitched for the first time as a Monarch took the loss. Freshman Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) pitched the first seven innings for ODU, allowing two runs on five hits and two strikeouts.
The Monarchs travel to Farmville, Va. To play at Longwood on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
