WINSTON-SALEM, NC-- Marshall University (2-0) edged out Old Dominion (0-1) , 3-2 in the Wake ForestBaseball Invitational Friday.
Senior centerfielder Max Most(Port Washington, NY.) led the Monarchs with three hits as did sophomore outfield Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.).
The Monarchs first run came in the second on a Max Most single which plated Corsner. The Monarchssecond run came in the ninth inning on a Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) infield single which plated freshman pinch hitter Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, Va.).
Marshall tied the game at one in the bottom of the second inning on a Thor Meeks homerun. TheThundering Herd took the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Shackleford which platedVictor Gomez. Marshall's final run came in the fifth when Nate Lape singled home Adam Yeager.
ODU outhit Marshall, 12-6 on the day. Sophomore lefthander Kyle Hald fanned five as did freshmanBen Tomchick (Virginia Beach, Va.), who was the Virginia High School League All-Star Game MVP. Ryan Kiel picked up the win for Marshall who beat Akron earlier in the day. Kiel fanned six in five innings of work. Austin Coan picked up the save in the ninth inning.
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday against Marshall at 11 am, then tournament host Wake Forest at 6 p.m.
