Norfolk, Va. - Dan Pitts passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday to lead the Old Dominion Blue to a 17-7 win over the White in the Monarchs final scrimmage of the fall season. The freshman from Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach completed 16-of-24 attempts, connecting with nine different receivers.
With a lack of depth at several positions due to injuries, a pass skeleton drill featuring the backs and receivers against the linebackers and the defensive secondary was used throughout the scrimmage to give the offensive and defensive lines a rest.
The White got on the board first in the second quarter courtesy of two defensive pass interference calls. The second gave the White a 1st-and-goal from the 2-yard line and Tommy Reamon tossed a strike to Kai Blanco for the 7-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the White, that proved to be their first and only score of the afternoon.
Pitts and the Blue team wasted little time responding as he found Nick Mayers (2 rec, 85 yds) for a 65-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the ensuing possession.
Osric Robinson, a transfer from Ferrum, gave the Blue another chance to put points on the board before the end of the half, when he picked off Reamon and returned it 21 yards to the White 35 with just over a minute remaining. A 34-yard reception by Chris Lovitt gave the Blue a first down at the one, but an offensive holding call eventually moved the ball back to the 13. The penalty gave the offense a few more yards to work with and proved beneficial when Reid Evans ran a fade to the left corner of the end zone, making a leaping catch over Donald Smith for a 14-0 Blue lead at the break.
Neither team could muster much offense in the second half, the only score coming on a 51-yard field goal by Drew Hareza who just missed a 52-yarder earlier in the scrimmage.
Evans finished with a game-high five receptions for 52 yards but had to leave the game late in the fourth quarter with a leg injury.
Blue linebacker Michael Colbert led all defenders with eight tackles (6 solo) and an interception, while Chad King paced the White defense with seven stops (6 solo) and a sack.
