REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday. The competitors meeting commenced with a moment of silence toremember PJ Wenner from the University of Hawaii. Racing started at 10AM onthe Potomac River with South winds around 12mph with gusts over 20. Conditionswere ideal and four A races and 3 B races were run by 1:30PM. Hearingreports of a squall line approaching the race committee sent B division inand waited for the squall to pass. After the squall linecame through thewind died and racing was called for the day. One protest was filed whichwas disallowed. Thanks to Andrew Campbell and Jackie Schmitz for hearingthe protest. Tomorrow's forecast calls for a very strong west wind whichmeans small courses and shifty winds in the Washington Sailing Marinalagoon.
Sunday - Windy and Shifty. Races were held in the Washington Sailing MarinaLagoon. The wind started out in the low teens and quickly built to the low20's with gusts over 30. Numerous capsizes in B division and a lot of blownout jib windows. The races were very short and the wind shifted between WSWand NW which made the racing very tricky. The wind died as the dayprogressed but that only made the racing harder as the lulls were 4mph andthe puffs were in the upper teens. Three protests were filed two weredisallowed and the third resulted in a DSQ. Many thanks to John Camera,Berry Kurland and Kyle Bergeron for hearing protests. Thanks to Ian Burman(Navy) and Mike Buckley (Conn) for helping with run the crash boat. Thanksalso to the Georgetown undergrads who did a great job running races andfixing boats in very difficult conditions. In particular Amanda Hassler forscoring, Michael Campbell for Race Committee and Nik Holtan for crash boat.
