WILMINGTON, NC--Old Dominion University sophomore thirdbaseman JakeMcAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) knocked in five runs, including two homers tolead the Monarchs to a 9-3 CAA victory over 26th ranked UNC Wilmington Fridaynight. The win gives the Monarchs the fifth seed in next weeks CAA Championshipsin Wilmington, May 21-24. ODU is 25-24 overall and 14-13 in the CAA, whileUNCW is 40-13-1 overall and 24-4-1 in the CAA.
With the score tied at 2-2, ODU scored two in the sixth when David Burns led offwith a double and McAloose followed with a two-run homer to left for a 4-2 lead.
In the eighth inning, ODU scored three runs. Chris Buss' reached on a fielder's choiceto plate Anthony Shawler from third. Jimmy Miles then singled in Chris Buss andGerard Hall to make it 7-2.
ODU finished their scoring in the top of the ninth as McAloose slammed another two-runhomer with Bryan Cipolla aboard. McAloose also knocked in a run in ODU's two-runfirst inning.
Senior righthander Ryan Berg and freshman lefthander Kyle Hald held the Seahawksto just five hits and three runs. Berg is now 6-5 with a 3.27 earned run average whichranks second in the CAA. UNCW's Jeff Hatcher took his first loss of the season.
ODU pounded out 12 hits led by McAloose with four, Jimmy Miles and Max Most withtwo each.
Towson and Georgia State are still battling for the sixth and final spot. ODU and UNCWplay Saturday at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale.
