Old Dominion Falls in Early Season ACC/CAA Clash to Clemson, 66-53

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -James Mays had 17 points, including seven during a decisive 24-4 run in the second half, to lead Clemson to a 66-53 win against Old Dominion on Saturday.

The game had 15 lead changes. ODU led 30-27 with 1:20 left in the firsthalf, but James Mays two free throws with seven seconds left game theTigers a 30-34 halftime lead.

The Tigers (3-0) got 16 points from K.C. Rivers, who hit four of seven 3-pointers, and 11 points and 12 rebounds from Trevor Booker.

Old Dominion (2-1) opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 40-36 lead with 14:10 left in the game. But Clemson outscored the Monarchs 24-4 over the next nine minutes to put the game away with a 60-44 lead with less than five minutes left in the game.

ODU shot .440 (22-50) from the floor, while Clemson, coached by ODUHall of Famer and captain of the 1975 NCAA Division II National Championship team Oliver Purnell shot .357 (25-70), but the Tigers outrebounded ODU, 43-33, including 22 offensive rebounds.

ODU committed 23 turnovers, while Clemons had 18. Sam Harris blockedanother career high tying seven shots, while Gerald Lee led ODu with sevenboards.

Brandon Johnson led Old Dominion with 13 points and Gerald Lee chipped in 12.

Clemson scored the final seven points of the first half to lead 34-30 at the break.

The Monarchs return to action Tuesday night against Iona in the ConstantCenter. Game time is 7 p.m. and this constest is part of the FindlayToyota Las Vegas Tournament.
