WILLIAMSBURG, VA-- Pete Vernon pitched a complete game to lead theTribe of William and Mary (28-24/12-15) to a 11-4 victory over Old Dominion (32-21/17-10) Thursday night. ODU's loss coupled with victories by Delaware and VCU's dropped the Monarchs into a three-way tie for first place in the CAA.
In the bottom of the third, the Tribe exploded for six runs highlighted by a three-run homer by Mike Sheridan to take a 6-1 lead.
The nation's second leading hitter Greg Sexton (.452) singled home a runin the fourth for the Tribe, and knocked in another with a sacrifice fly in The bottom of the sixth.
ODU took the early lead in the second when Anthony Shawler singled with two outs, followed by a run scoring double by catcher Tyler Belcher.
In the fifth inning Mike Zahm hit a three-run shot with Cameron Scott and Chris Keenan aboard. Chris Keenan led ODU with three hits on the day, while Tyler Belcher had two.
The two teams play again on Friday night at 7 p.m. William and Mary's at Plumeri Park.
