THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES: The Lady Monarchs have their final regular season home game on Wednesday, April 25th at 4:00 p.m. against the Tribe of William & Mary. The six Old Dominion seniors - Jackie Brown, Caroline Jacobs, Danielle Haley, Ashley Stanwick, Kristen Truax, and Katie Veneziale - will be honored right before the opening draw.
ABOUT OLD DOMINION: The regular season comes to a close on Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs meet the Tribe of the College of William & Mary. Old Dominion holds a 6-7 overall record and is 3-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs continues to lead the team in scoring, amassing 26 goals, nine assists, and 35 points. She also leads the team in groundballs (38) and caused turnovers (26). Fellow classmate and midfielder Katie Veneziale checks in as the squad's second leading scorer with 17 goals, a team-leading 13 assists, and 30 points. Third on the stat sheet is junior attacker Kelly Kimener with 22 goals, five assists, and 27 points. In between the pipes, junior Sara Larson is holding a .500 save percentage and 10.02 goals against average.
WE'RE IN: No matter the outcome of Wednesday's game, the Lady Monachs are heading back to the CAA Tournament. Old Dominion makes the post-season for the first time since 2003 and will be the tournament's fourth seeded. The other top three seed are still up in the air as well as the site of the tournament will be be awarded to top seed. It all comes down to Friday's James Madison/Hofstra match-up. Should the Dukes win, Harrisonburg will become the site of the 2007 CAA Tournament with Delaware as the number two seed and Hofstra the three seed. Should the Pride emerge victorious, Hempstead will become the site of the 2007 CAA Tournament with James Madison as the two seed and Hofstra as the three seed. HOW WE GOT IN: The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team was able to clinch a berth to the 2007 CAA women's lacrosse tournament with an 8-7 over George Mason last Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field. Going to the post-season was made possible by the victory over the Patriots and a Towson loss to Hofstra. The Lady Monarchs hold a 3-3 CAA mark heading into Wednesday's season finale against William & Mary. With the loss to the Pride, the Tigers drop to 3-4 and no matter the outcome of Wednesday's game, miss post-season on the tiebreak as the Lady Monarchs defeated them in a 9-8 thriller at Johnny Unitas Stadium last week.
SERIES VS. WILLIAM & MARY: Old Dominion is 9-27 all-time versus the Tribe.
ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY: The Tribe enters Foreman Field with a 3-12 overall mark and 1-5 CAA record fresh off an upset over #9 James Madison last Sunday. William & Mary handed the Dukes their only conference loss so far by taking a 10-9 double overtime victory. Junior midfielder Jamie Seller leads her squad with 34 goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Kristen Wong is second on the Tribe in scoring with 16 goals and 10 assists. In net, freshman Sara Beckstead is holding a .459 save percentage and 11.12 goals against average.
LAST TIME VS. WILLIAM & MARY: The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team overcame an 11-4 halftime deficit to pull within two goals late in the second half in an April 26th, 2006, 15-13, loss to #15 William & Mary.Jessica Noone , Kelly Kimener, and Caroline Jacobs all tallied four goals in the loss. Trailing 11-4 at the intermission, Old Dominion went on to outscore William & Mary 9-4 in half number two. The Tribe was leading 15-6 with 15:12 left in the game and threating to keep the clock moving with a potential 10-goal lead. However, the Lady Monarch defense would keep the nation's 15th-ranked team scoreless the rest of the way, while netting seven unanswered goals to close the game. Noone started the scoring barrage with 12:56 remaining with Kimener and Jacobs also scoring throughout the final minutes. Noone scored her fourth of the evening with :51 seconds remaining to pull the Lady Monarchs to within two, 15-13. Although the Lady Monarchs collected the draw and had another two attempts on net, Tribe keeper Debby Petraca managed to stop the ball from going between the pipes to preserve the victory. William & Mary's Collen Dallon ended the night with a game-high four goals. The Tribe outshot the Lady Monarchs, 29-26, but it was a tale of two halves. William & Mary outshot ODU, 21-8, in the first half, but the trend reverse in the second half with ODU outshooting its opponent, 18-8.The Tribe also held a slight edge in groundballs, 23-21. Four different Tribe members collected three groundballs in the victory while former netmider Michelle Gannon registered a game-high seven and Jacobs scooped up five. The draws ended up even at 15-15. Dalon won five for William & Mary, while ODU's Jacobs managed five.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING: Senior Caroline Jacobs is currently ranked 15th nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.00) and 25th in groundballs per game (2.92). Jacobs is not the only Lady Monarch to featured in the NCAA stats. Classmate Katie Veneziale is currently 38th nationally in draw controls averaging 2.54 per outing. Additionally, Sara Larson is 19th nationally in save percentage (.500) and 20th in goals against average (10.02).
LOOKING AROUND THE CAA: Several Lady Monarchs are ranked among their Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) peers. Senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs is fouth in groundballs per game (2.92) and third in caused turnovers (2.00). Katie Veneziale is fourthin draw controls per game (2.54) and eighth in assists per game (1.00). Freshman Ashley Kellogg is tied for second with three game-winning goals under her belt. Netminder junior Sara Larson fourth in goals against average (10.02) and fourth in save percentage (.500).

THE CENTURY MARK: Senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs, with her lone goal against Delaware on April 15th, scored her 100th career goal. She is one of 42 active Division I women's student-athletes to achieve the mark. Additionally , her performance this year has pushed her career point total mark to 152. She is one of 29 active Division I women's student-athletes to tally 150 or more career points.
NO LOSS IS A GOOD LOSS...: No loss is certainly a good loss, but if you look at the Lady Monarch losses, six of seven have come at the hands of ranked teams, three of the seven have come at the hands of the nation's top ten and two have been in overtime.
RANK 'EM UP: Last Thursday's match-up with #9/7 James Madison on Thursday afternoon marked the sixth ranked opponent the Lady Monarchs have taken on. Old Dominion previously met up with No. 1 North Carolina, No. 18/20 Rutgers, No. 20/18 Richmond, No. 5/5 Virginia, and No. 9/7 James Madison. Old Dominion took on Rutgers, Richmond, and Virginia marking a string of three consecutive games against ranked opponents and more recently just faced the ranked CAA foes Delaware and James Madison back-to-back.
UP NEXT: Old Dominion hosts its annual Alumni Game on Saturday April 26th. The Lady Monarchs will then return to action the following weekend at the CAA Tournament in either Harrisonburg, Virginia or Hempstead, New York.
