ABOUT OLD DOMINION: Old Dominion women's lacrosse team opened up the 2007 season last Sunday with a 14-6 victory over American. Senior Caroline Jacobs and junior Kelly Kimener captured five goals and an assist apiece in their 2007 debut. In all five different Lady Monarch found the back of the American pipes with senior Katie Venziale scoring twice and sophomore Jessica Noone and freshman Ashley Kellogg each capturing a score.
SERIES VS. UMBC: Old Dominion is 17-1 all-time versus the Retrievers.
ABOUT UMBC: The Retrievers enter Sunday's contest with Old Dominion sporting a 3-3 overall mark. UMBC is coming off a 5-16 loss at the hands of fellow ODU CAA rival Delaware with the Retrievers' other losses coming sixth-ranked Maryland (8-23) and Loyola (9-10 OT). UMBC's victories have inlcuded a 23-7 season opening win over Howard, a 13-5 win against Bucknell, and an overtime win, 11-10, versus Oregon. Senior midfielder Kelly Fahey leads the Retrievers with 11 goals and five assists. Junior attacket Ali Levendusky is close behind on the stat sheet with 11 goals and four assists.
LAST TIME VS. UMBC: Former Lady Monarchs Melody Shotwell and Caroline Jacobs scored three goals apiece as the ODU Lady Monarchs earned an 11-7 victory over the Retrievers of UMBC back on March 11, 2006 at Foreman Field. Jacobs also added two assists to complement her three goals. Ashley Stanwick scored two goals, as did Jessica Noone. Kelly Kimener also contributed a goal for the Lady Monarchs. UMBC was led by Kelly Fiorani who tallied three goals on the afternoon. Kelly Fahey, Heather Licht, Ali Levendusky, and Meghan Keelan also found the back of the net for the Lady Retrievers. With UMBC up 2-1 early in the first half, Shotwell would respond with a goal at the 12:45 mark to tie the ballgame, and Stanwick would score at 16:15 to give them the lead. That 3-2 score would hold into halftime as the teams headed to the locker room. In the second session, goals by Stanwick and Jacobs gave ODU a 5-3 advantage before UMBC quickly rallied with two goals to bring the score to 5-4 with 17:51 left on the clock. Goals by Noone and Kimener would give ODU a 7-4 lead before three unanswered Lady Retriever scores would knot the game at 7-7 with 8:20 left. Jacobs would answer the deadlock with two goals scored :25 seconds apart to give the Lady Monarchs the lead, and two more ODU scores in the final minutes brought the final score to 11-7. In goal, former netminder Michelle Gannon played all game and stopped six shots. Teamwise, Old Dominion took 28 shots on goal compared to UMBC's 11, while the visitors won the groundball battle 17-14. ODU narrowly won the turnover battle, 14-16.
POW: Old Dominion senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs was named a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Co-Player of the Week last week. Jacobs captured five goals and an assist her 2007 debut and also led the way for the Lady Monarchs in groundballs, draw controls, and caused turnovers. The fourth year Lady Monarch scooped up a game-high four groundballs, caused a game-high three turnovers, and tied for the lead in draw registering four. It is Jacobs' second CAA weekly honor also earning the award for the week ending April 24th of her sophomore season in 2005. It was during final week of the regular season that Jacobs poured in nine goals and three assists as the Lady Monarchs dropped two close games to nationally ranked opponents, #20 William & Mary and #9 North Carolina to earn her first CAA Player of the Week distinction.
MOVING ON UP: Senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs' performance of five goals and an assist against American moved her into seventh on the ODU all-time points leaders list and moved into the top 10 on the all-time on the goals leaders list.

THE ROOKIE: Freshman Ashley Kellogg was the lone member of the freshman class that head coach Sue Stahl placed in last week's starting line-up. In her first appearance in a Lady Monarch uniform Kellogg was one of five goals scorers capturing the game-winner at the 9:32 mark of the first half in last week's 14-6 win over American.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Lady Monarchs begin the first of a five game road trip when they travel to UMBC on Sunday. Before the trip is over, Old Dominion will have traveled nearly 1,700 miles with trips to Baltimore (UMBC), Chapel Hill (UNC), Piscataway, New Jersey (Rutgers), Philadelphia (Temple) and Richmond (Richmond).
