NORFOLK, VA -- For the second straight game, the Monarchs got huge production from the middle of the order. Jake McAloose, David Burns, and Tyler Belcher (ODU's 3-4-5 hitters) combined for five of ODU's ten hits and nine runs batted in against Iona College (2-4) today. McAloose had the best day with a 2-for-3, four RBI, two run scoring performance. Burns added his third home run of the season in the 5th inning.
On the hill, Dan Hudson put together a fine pitching performance, going 7.2 innings and striking out eight. He retired 20 batters by strikeout or groundout while only allowing three hits before the 8th inning. Dexter Carter relieved Hudson with the charge of retiring four batters. In his inning and a third, he didn't allow a hit.
At the plate, McAloose, Burns, and Belcher, who combined for 6 RBI's against Radford on Wednesday, continued their hot hitting with three extra base hits. McAloose and Belcher both stroked 2-RBI doubles while Burns added a two-run blast in the fifth inning. Burns' bomb was a no-doubter as soon as it hit the bat over the right field wall.
The Monarchs also added two triples on the day; one came from Nick Erdman and the other from pinch hitter Cameron Scott. Mike Zahm added three runs and two stolen bases while Anthony Shawler had two hits of his own, including a double in the third.
The Gaels scored all four runs in the 8th inning with RBI singles from Andrew Passerelle and Andrew Wernicki and a 2-RBI double from Kevin McGovern.
Old Dominion improves to 8-6 as they prepare for three more games against Iona this weekend. The double-header Saturday is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
