Five Spot In Eighth Leads ODU Over Hofstra, 11-6

NORFOLK, VA--Junior designated hitter David Burns' (Jacksonville, FL.) two-out single broke a six-all tie in the eighth as Old Dominion (16-10/4-2) erupted for five runs to defeat Hofstra (7-11/2-4), 11-6 today at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. ODU pounded out 18 hits on the day.

Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.) started the rally with two outs in the eighth with a single and Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) reached on an error. Burns then singled to plate Zahm, giving ODU a 7-6 lead. Tyler Belcher(Bristol, VA.) and Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.) followed with RBI hits and Cameron Scott (Culpepper, VA.)finished the inning with a two-run hit to give ODU the 11-6 lead.

Shawler singled home Belcher in the third, hit his third home run of the seasonin the sixth and knocked in a run in the eighth. Nick Erdman (Leola,PA.) extended his hitting streak to 14 games, and Burns extended his hitting streak to 11.

Senior Hunter Hall(Virginia Beach, VA.) came on in the fifth to pick up his third win of the season. Hall allowed just four hits, one run and fanned five. Mike Zahm, Tyler Belcher, Anthony Shawler and Cameron Scott each had three hits , while Shawler led ODU with three RBI.

Hofstra was led by Matt Prokopowicz with three hits and an RBI. The Pride scored four runs in the top of the first and added another in the fifth. Shortstop Tom Legregni tied the game in the eighth with a single, scoring Anthony Campana.

The Monarchs return to action Wednesday night when they host VMI at 6 p.m.
