Rutgers Defeats Monarchs, 9-5

NORFOLK, VA--The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (3-1) scored four runs in boththe fourth and fifth innings en route to a 9-5 victory over Old Dominion (5-5) Fridayafternoon in game one of a three game series.

Ryan Hill's groundout scored Todd Frazier and David Williams sacrifice fly, plated Mike Bionde to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Frank MeadeFollowed with a solo homer and Tim Querns stole home to make it 4-0.

ODU came back in the bottom of the frame when David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) singled home Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, Va.) who led the inning off with a double. Tyler Belcher's sacrifice fly later scored Jake McAloose (VA. Beach, VA.) who reached on an error.

Rutgers added four more runs in the fifth, two of which were unearned to pushthe lead to 8-2. The Monarchs added two more in the bottom of the seventh as McAloose singled home Chris Keenan and Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.). Jon Gossard hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth for Rutgers to make it 9-4. ODU's final run came on David Burns' single which scored Chris Keenan.

ODU out hit Rutgers, 11-9, but left ten men on base to the Scarlet Knightsfour. Matt Giannini picked up the win for Rutgers, fanning six in 6.2 innings of work.Tony Wargo came on with the bases loaded in the ninth to get the final out and thesave. Dan Hudson (VA. Beach, VA.) fanned eight in seven innings for the Monarchs.

Freshman third baseman Jake McAloose led ODU with three hits, while freshmanShortstop Gerard Hall along with Chris Keenan and David Burns each had two hits forODU. The same two teams play again Saturday at 1 p.m.
