NORFOLK, Va. -- The third-ranked Old Dominion field hockey lost only its second game of the 2006 season as they were edged out 1-0 by top-ranked Maryland in a thriller at Foreman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 13-2 overall, with both losses coming at the hands of the Terps. Of ODU's four home games, the Terps have been the first opponent to score on Foreman Field this season. Maryland meanwhile improves to 14-1 overall.

The score was 0-0 at the half with Old Dominion holding a slight advantage in shots, 5-4.

Early in the second half, the Lady Monarchs had a chance to break the stalemate as leading scorer, senior midfielder Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.), was awarded a penalty stroke. Sensenig entered the day's contest first in the nation having converted all four of her penalty strokes. The Terps changed keepers replacing starting netminder Kathryn Masson with Christina Restivo. Restivo stopped Sensenig's stroke and Masson was promptly put back into the game.

Maryland's Nicole Muracco broke the stalemate about five minutes later to collect the only goal of the game. Paula Infante dribbled to the top right of the circle making the pass to Muracco. Old Dominion goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) raced out trying to stop the pass from reaching Muracco, but was caught out of position as Muracco received the ball for the goal.

The Lady Monarchs had several looks at net during the second half, but could not convert.

Old Dominion ended the game outshooting Maryland, 12-11, and outcornerd the Terps, 8-3. Driscoll made eight saves in the loss, while starting keeper Masson registered seven.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday hosting #4 Duke at 1:00 p.m.
