ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Lady Monarchs continuetheir five-game road trip this week traveling to Princeton andDrexel. So far this season Old Dominion in 5-1 on the road,including a neutral site meeting with Ohio. All together, the LadyMonarchs will have traveled to three states (North Carolina, NewJersey, Pennsylvania) and nearly 1,500 miles during their threeweeks on the. Old Dominion returns on Sunday, October 1stagainst CAA opponent Towson.
CONFERENCE SLATE BEGINS: Following its matchupwith Princeton on Saturday, the Lady Monarchs travel toDrexel on Sunday to kick-off Colonial Athletic Association play. The Lady Monarchs are 14-1 all-time in CAA openersand are 118-5 overall against CAA competition, including a 88-3 mark in regular season action. This will be thesecond consecutive year the Lady Monarchs have opened CAA action against Drexel.
THIS IS HOW WE START: Old Dominion is off to a 7-1 start, the best start by the program since 2000. That seasonthe Lady Monarchs won the first two games of the season before falling to Maryland. The loss against the Terps wouldbe the only that season as the Lady Monarchs rattled off 23 straight victories and brought home its last national championship.The 2006 campaign kicked off with a 3-0 start, its best start to a season since they started off the 2002 Final Fourseason 3-0 as well. Again it was Maryland who haulted the winning streak this season and also back in 2002.
SEE YA REAL SOON: Although Old Dominion took home a 3-1 victory over then #4 North Carolina and a 4-3overtime victory over then #5 Duke last weekend, it won't be the only time the Lady Monarchs see those two teams this season.Along with Maryland, Old Dominion will has a home-and-home series with the two teams. Rematches will occur atForeman Field on Sunday, October 15th for Duke on Saturday, October 28th for North Carolina. Note: The homegame against the Tar Heels will be the annual scholarship game with the $5.00 admission to benefit the IntercolleigateFoundation for Field Hockey Scholarships.
NICHOLS NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK - AGAIN: For the second straight week senior defenderCaroline Nichols has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. Nichols helped ODU extendits winning streak to four games as the Lady Monarchs defeated #4 North Carolina and #5 Duke. Defensively, Nicholshelped hold the Tar Heels to only one goal as they gave North Carolina its first loss of the season. North Carolina hadbeen averaging 4.00 goals per game, fifth nationally, entering the weekend. On Sunday against Duke, Nichols capturedthe game-winner with 5:55 remaining in the second overtime to lift ODU to the win over the 2005 national runner-ups.After falling behind 3-1 at the half, Nichols and the defense did not allow the Blue Devils to find the back of the ODUnet the rest of the afternoon.
NICHOLS CLAIMS ANOTHER AWARD - AGAIN: Not only was senior defender Caroline Nichols namedthe CAA Player of the Week for her a second straight week, she was also named to the Women's Field Hockey.comhonor roll for a second consecutive week as well.
LAST TIME VS. PRINCETON: It's been nearly twoyears since the Tigers and Lady Monarchs squared off againstone another. Back on October 31, 2004, former LadyMonarchs Lynn Farquhar and Beth Maddox each ended theirregular season tenure at Foreman Field on a high note as No.7 Old Dominion closed out the regular season campaign withan 8-2 victory over Princeton. Four Lady Monarchs had twogoals apiece. Maddox, Shannon Mobley, Dana Sensenig, andformer Lady Monarch Janelle Engle each found the back ofthe Tiger cage twice. Farquhar and Sensenig also registeredtwo assists apiece in the victory. Both Tiger goals werescored by junior attacker Lauren Ehrlichman and assisted bysenior midfielder Natalie Martirosian. Maddox led the chargefor Old Dominion scoring six minutes into the game to givethe Lady Monarchs' a lead they would never lose. Mobley, injust her second career star,t recorded the assist and then laterput away the Lady Monarchs' second tally with 16:10 left inthe first half. Princeton got onto the board with 9:06 left inthe half as Ehrlichman put away the first of her two goals.However, the Lady Monarchs responded right away as Engleconverted one of two penalty corner goals for the eventualgame-winner. The Tigers cut the deficit back to one, 3-2, with4:03 remaining in the half as Ehrlichman reached the back ofthe Lady Monarch net again, however Old Dominion would go on to tally a penalty corner goal by Engle as time expired inthe first half and add four unanswered goals in the second half. The Tiger defense kept Old Dominion at bay until Mobleybroke through for the Lady Monarchs' first goal of the second half and her second goal of the afternoon with 13:35 left.Moments later Sensenig, ODU's leading scorer, tallied the first of back-to-back goals and Maddox rounded out the scoringbarrage with 6:36 left in the game. Old Dominion outshot the Tigers, 12-10, and held a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners.
LAST TIME VS. DREXEL: Forward Katelyn Smither paced the Lady Monarchs offense with three goals as the seventh-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team downed Drexel, 7-0, last season on September 25th. Defensively OldDominion picked up its third shutout of the 2005 season, while offensively, Smither was one of five Lady Monarchs to findthe back of the Dragon cage. Former Lady Monarch Janelle Engle was Old Dominion's other multiple scorer of the day withboth her goals coming from penalty corners. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Dragons, 26-2. Both Drexel shots came in thesecond half resulting in saves from former ODU netminder Mary Cate Gordon. The Dragons were held without a penaltycorner the entire game while Old Dominion racked up 15. Dana Sensenig tallied the Lady Monarchs' first goal of the game,which would prove to the game-winner at the 14:08 mark. Over the next six minutes, the Lady Monarchs added onto thelead to take a 3-0 advantage into the half. Engle scored on one of her two penalty corner goals and Smither collected the firstof her three tallies from a feed to the right side of the cage from Jennifer Angat. Smither would go on to registered the nexttwo goals in the second half, registering goal number two at the 38:18 mark and scoring again a mere 19 seconds later.Daphne Admiraal, off a rebound from Drexel keeper, and Engle, on another penalty corner, would round of the scoring forthe game. Drexel goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew was kept busy much of the afternoon, but managed to record 14 saves.Additionally, Rachael Bloemker made a defensive save for the Dragons.
