NORFOLK, VA--Senior catcher Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA.)singled home Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.)in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift #25 Old Dominion (37-9/19-5) to a 2-1 victory over the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth (25-21/14-10).
Starting pitchers Cody Eppley for VCU and freshman Dan Hudson(Virginia Beach, Va.) for ODU dueled through five scoreless innings. The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the sixth as Scott Sizemore (Chesapeake, VA.) led off with a single, then scored on Tim St. Clair's double.
ODU tied the game in the eighth with two outs. Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.) doubled off Eppley, and scored when Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, Va.)doubled off reliever Mick Mattaliano. In the bottom of the 11th, Bryan Cipolla led off with a double to rightfield and Nichols then singled to right to end the game.
Dana Arrowood picked up his fourth win of the season. Dan Hudson fannednine in nine innings of work, walking only one batter. VCU's Cody Eppley fannedsix through seven-plus innings of work, walking two.
Nate Anderson led VCU with two hits, while Jimmy Miles and Mike Zahm eachhad three hits for ODU and Patrick Nichols had two hits. ODU returns to action on Tuesday when they host Richmond at 7 p.m.
