Delaware Defeats ODU, 12-2 On Eight Monarch Errors

NEWARK, DE--The University of Delaware (23-13/8-8) exploded for eight unearned runs in the sixth with the help of four ODU errors to defeat the Monarchs(34-7/16-3), 12-2 Friday afternoon. The victory was the eighth straight for Delawarewho has now scored 122 runs in the eight games.

With Delaware leading, 2-1 in the sixth, the Monarchs committed four of theireight errors. Dan Richardson capped off the inning with a three-run homer and BrandonMenchaca added a two-run double for the Fightin' Blue Hens.

Richardson led Delaware with four runs batted in, while Alex Buchholz and Brandon Menchaca added two RBI's each. Richardson, Adam Tsakonas and Ryan Engelhardt each had two hits on the day for Delaware.

ODU took the lead in the second inning on Dana Arrowood's (Woodbridge, VA.) fourth homer of the season, a solo shot over the left centerfield fence. The Monarchs final run came in the ninth as Cameron Scott (Culpepper, VA.) scored on an outfield error on Anthony Shawler's (Chesapeake, VA.) double.

ODU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out as Mike Zahm singled, Brian Cipolla (Plaineview, NY.) reached on an error and Dana Arrowood walked, but UD reliever Kevin Brown came in and struckout the next two Monarchs to end the threat. Brown picked up his first save of the season, fanning four in three-plus innings. Starter Mike McGuire got the win as he struckout eight. ODU's Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ.) gave up ten runs, nine unearned with no walks and six strikeouts.

The eight errors is the most in a game by the Monarch since March 3,1955 when the then Norfolk Division committed 11 against Bridgewater. The five errors by thirdBaseman Stephen Dorst is the most since Tom Wyszataycky committed six on April 26,1952 against Richmond Professional Institute. ODU played without regularshortstop Jesse Schoendienst (hand injury) and thirdbaseman Justin Gregula (foot injury).
