Nichols, Hudson & Arrowood Lead ODU to 20-2 Win Over Mason

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion (17-3/3-0) pounded out 23 hits, including two homers from catcher Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA.) to defeat the Patriots of George Mason (7-10/2-4), 20-2 and sweep the three-game CAA series. Freshman righthander Dan Hudson(Virginia Beach, VA.) picked up his third win of the year.

Nichols and Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) each knocked in four runs on the day. Nichols slammed a three-run homer in ODU's five-run first inning. He then hit his team leading eighth homerun, a solo shot in the seventh. Arrowood singled in a run in the fourth inning, then hit a three-run homer in the seventh. Arrowood had four hits which included a homer, triple and two singles.

Mike Zahm(Omaha, NE.), Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) and Patrick Nichols each had three hits on the day, while Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.), Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) and Keith Hahn (Valley Streem, NY.) had two hits each. Dan Hudson pitched 7.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and fanning seven. His earned run average is now 0.58 which leads the CAA. As a team, ODU's earned run average is at 3.19.

Mason's first run came in the seventh with one out when Robby Jacobsenhit a solo homer to centerfield, ending the series scoreless stretch at 24.2. It wasJacobsen's fourth homer of the year. The Patriots scored in the ninth on Ryan Uphouse'ssolo homer. Jason Bour led the Patriots with three hits, while Ryan Uphouse, RobbyJacobsen, and Matt Barrett each had two hits. The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday night when they host Radford at 7 p.m.
