NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team picked up wins against Howard and CAA rival George Mason back on Saturday afternoon at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News to improve to 6-2 on the season. The Lady Monarchs earned a 7-0 victory over Howard and picked up their first CAA victory of the seaosn with a 4-0 win against the Patriots.
The day opened with the 7-0 victory over the Howard Bison. Old Dominion swept doubles for the first points of the day. Charleen Haarhoff and Fernanda Luiz defeated Laura Marin and Jasmine Smith 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Barbara Kerner and Barbara Costa defeated Aja Wright and Fenn 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Linda Garder and Larissa Santos earned an 8-3 victory over Cecelia Townes and Nicole Henderson at the No. 3 spots.
The Lady Monarchs took home five victories in singles in straight set. Kerstin Endlich, at No. 1 singles, played her way to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jasmine Smith and Haarhoff picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Laura Marin at the No. 2 spot. Playing at No. 3 singles, Barbara Costa needed a tie-break in the second set to get past Aja Wright, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Fernanda Luiz defeated Cecelia Townes at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-1, and Barbara Kerner edged out Ayana Hypolite at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Larissa Santos defeated Paige Fenn at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) in the day's other singles match.
Old Dominion then went on to score a 4-0 win over George Mason taking the doubles point and wins at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles.
At doubles Haarhoff and Luiz at No. 1 doubles and Endlich and Santos at No. 2 doubles both earned 8-2 victories. Haarhoff and Luiz defeated Maricel Ballester and Andreea Fusea, while Endlich and Santos downed Jenn Dektas and Juile Moscato. Barbara Kerner and Barbara Costa rounded out play with an 8-1 No. 3 doubles victory over Melissa Wooten and Alicia Van Zandt.
Singles was highlighted by the 6-0, 6-0 match from Barbara Kerner at No. 5 singles defeating the Patriot's Claudia Antezano. Other Lady Monarch winners included Fernada Luiz at No. 4 singles defeating Van Zandt, 6-0, 6-1, and Linda Garder at No. 6 singles defeating Jen Kramer, 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Monarch women's tennis team will return to action on Sunday, February 26th against #31 Maryland in College Park.
