Monarchs Fall To Richmond In OT, 61-58

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Kevin Steenberge had eight points and an assist in overtime, leading Richmond to a 61-58 win over Old Dominion Tuesday night.

The Spiders (5-4) scored the first 17 points in the game, capped by a 3-pointer by Jarhon Giddings at 12:38. Richmond stretched the lead to 24-5 with 7:42 remaining before Old Dominion (7-3) began to rally, cutting the lead to 30-17 at halftime.

ODU tied a new school record with 22 consecutive free throws made. TheMonarchs also broke the old single game free throw percentage mark of .952(20-21) set in 1966 against Towson. The Monarchs were a perfect22 of 22.

The Spiders could muster but one field goal over the next 7:17 and the Monarchs pulled to within 30-28 with 14:58 remaining. However, the Monarchs could never get the lead in regulation, tying the game at 46 on two free throws by Alex Loughton with 2:59 remaining. Neither team scored the rest of the second half.

The Monarchs took a quick four-point lead in overtime off two buckets by Isaiah Hunter. Steenberge's 3-point play with 1:23 remaining gave the Spiders a 56-54 lead. After Loughton hit a layup, Steenburge's dunk gave the Spiders the lead for good with :33 seconds left. Following a missed jumper by Hunter, Steenberge broke loose for a layup with four seconds remaining and finished the play off by hitting a free throw.

The Monarchs were a perfect 22-of-22 from the foul line. However, Old Dominion was 16-of-54 from the floor, while the Spiders hit 23-of-43, including nine 3-pointers.

Jermaine Bucknor led the Spiders with 19 points, going 5-of-9 on 3-pointers. Steenberge added 14.

Loughton led the Monarchs, matching his season-high of 22 points. Hunter added a season-high 21 points.

ODU travels to Birmingham, AL., to take on former Sun Belt Conferencerival UAB Thursday night at the Bartow Arena at 8:30 ET. The twoteams have not met since the 1991 Sun Belt quarterfinals.
