NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion senior Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) collected a career-high four goals to lead the eighth-ranked Lady Monarch field hockey team to a 5-0 shutout victory over Virginia Commonwealth on a soggy Foreman Field Friday evening.

The win improved Old Dominion to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as they registered their sixth straight win and fourth shutout of the 2005 season. The Rams meanwhile fell to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the CAA in their fourth straight loss.

All four of Engle's goals came off of penalty corners set up by juniors Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) and Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, Va.). She currently totals 12 goals, five assists, and 29 points.

Engle's first goal and the game-winner game came 14 minutes into the contest. The Mt. Joy, Pa native then gave the Lady Monarchs a 2-0 edge less than four minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman Denise Admiraal (Heiloo, Holland) then scored 37 seconds later to give Old Dominion a 3-0 lead at the half.

The second half saw Engle score both goals, one at the 47th minute and her final tally of the evening at the 55th minute.

Old Dominion outshot the Rams 20-3 and outcornered them, 20-1. The Lady Monarchs registered 11 penalty corners in the first half alone.

Virginia Commonwealth used a trio of goalkeepers in the cage. Starter Brittany LoVullo played the first half making four saves, while Becca Leuzzi and Laura Baker combined for four saves in the second half. Old Dominion's Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, Pa.) needed to make only one save on the evening, stopping the lone Ram shot on net in the second half by Amy Gallivan.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday against defending CAA Champions, the University of Delaware Blue Hens. Last season, the Fightin' Blue Hens upset Old Dominion in the semifinals of CAA Tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory snapped the Lady Monarchs' string of eight consecutive tournament titles. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field and admission is free.
