HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The seventh-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team clinched the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title and rights to host the 2005 CAA Field Hockey Tournament as it handed Hofstra a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Shuart Stadium.

The victory improved the Lady Monarchs to 13-5 overall and 7-0 in the CAA with one CAA game remaining. The Pride, who were receiving votes this week in the STX/NFHCA Poll, dropped to 11-5 overall and 4-2.

Senior Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) collected the game's lone goal. Engle's team-leading 15th tally of the season came in the 10th minute of play on a penalty corner with the insert from junior Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) and stick-stop by fellow classmate Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, Va.).

The Lady Monarchs outshot the Pride, 9-2, with both Hofstra shots coming in the first half of play. Both teams were almost evenly matched in the penalty corner department with Old Dominion holding the slight edge, 7-6.

In goal, Hofstra's Jessica Cowperthwait made four stops, while ODU's Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, Pa.) registered one.

The Lady Monarchs return to action next week hosting North Carolina on Saturday, November 29th. The game will be the annual scholarship match with the five-dollar admission to benefit the ODU Intercollegiate Foundation for Field Hockey Scholarships. Old Dominion will then close out the regular season at CAA rival William & Mary on Sunday, November 30th.
