NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion University field hockey team jumped one spot in this week's STX/NFHCA Poll released on Tuesday. The Lady Monarchs (6-4) are ranked sixth, moving up a spot from last week's ranking, after defeating then 16th-ranked Richmond, 5-2, and downing Drexel in their CAA opener, 7-0, for their third shutout of the season.
Nine Lady Monarch opponents are ranked this version of the poll, including five members of the Top Ten. Old Dominion dropped their contests against #2 Maryland, #3 North Carolina, and #4T American by only a goal, while they picked up wins over #4T Duke and #7 Penn State. The Lady Monarchs will have another crack at the Terps and Tar Heels later this season.
Joining Old Dominion in the poll from the CAA are #12 Northeastern and #17 James Madison. The Lady Monarchs will host the Dukes on Friday night at Foreman Field at 6:00 p.m. Other CAA teams receiving votes include William & Mary and Hofstra.
In the latest national stats released, several Lady Monarchs are included. Senior Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) and junior Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) are now seen on the national points leaders list. Engle ranks 10th in total points scored (20) and tied for 16th in points per game (2.0), while Sensenig is tied in the 11th spot in total points (19) and tied for 18th in points per contest (1.90). Additionally, Engle is tied for eighth in goals scored with eight. Junior Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, Va.), who has been ranked in the assists category all season, jumped up to third in total assists (9) and sixth in assists per game (0.90).
After hosting James Madison on Friday, the Lady Monarchs will travel to Towson on Sunday. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
