CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team shut out OldDominion 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The No. 2Tar Heels improved to 7-0, while the No. 5 Lady Monarchs fell to 4-3.Carey Fetting-Smith, a junior from Baltimore, scored twice, both timeson penalty corners. Her goals were on straight shots, assisted by juniorKaty Potter on the push-in and junior Laura Douglas on the stick stop.Junior Kelsey Keeran scored an unassisted goal late in the first half,then assisted on the team's fourth goal, by freshman Laree Beans earlyin the second half.
ODU had nine corners to seven by UNC. The Lady Monarchs were averagingthree goals per game coming into Saturday's contest, but were shut outfor the first time since September of 2002, when Carolina won 2-0 inlast year's game at Henry Stadium.
Coach Karen Shelton had praise for the Tar Heels' defense efforts, whichearned the team its fourth shutout in seven games. "I'm delighted withthe development of our defense," she said. "The three backs(Fetting-Smith, Ashley Judge and Brooke Miller) and Naomi Weatherald andthe midfield line are all playing much better defense. I can toleratesome of the lapses we had on attack because of how well we played ondefense. I'm very pleased with the way we're coming together as a unit."
The Tar Heels return to action Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. gameagainst No. 13 Virginia at Henry Stadium. The game is the season'sdesignated non-conference meeting with the Cavaliers.
Old Dominion plays at No. 4 Duke Sunday. Gametime is 1 p.m. at WilliamsField.
