NORFOLK, VA -- Senior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) assisted on the Lady Monarchs' first goal of the year and then put away the game-winner in the second half, helping the Old Dominion field hockey team to a season opening 3-1 victory over Louisville.
Old Dominion has won 22 of their last 23 season openers, including the last two straight. Louisville, also playing in their 2003 season opener, falls to 0-1 on the year.
The Cardinals struck first with senior forward Shelby Summers taking a breakaway into the back of the Lady Monarch net with 16:52 remaining in the opening half of play. However, Old Dominion would tie the game up 1-1 before the end of the half. Off a penalty corner, Loy dribbled the ball through the middle of the circle following the stick stop and fed the ball to sophomore Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA), who was waiting at the left side of the Louisville cage to knock in the goal. Engle's goal came with 5:52 left before intermission.
Loy had a chance to put the Lady Monarchs up midway through the second half, but failed to convert her penalty stroke. However, moments later Loy would sail the eventual game-winner through the Cardinal pipes off the Lady Monarchs' lone penalty corner of the second half. Her goal put Old Dominion up 2-1 with 17:30 left in the game. Engle, on the insert, and freshman Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, VA) were credited with the assists. Sophomore Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) added in an insurance goal with just over a minute remaining to seal the victory.
Lady Monarch netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) recorded two saves in her 2003 debut. The Cardinals' Christy Hershey registered four saves in the loss.
Old Dominion outshot the Cardinals, 10-4, and also held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-2.
The Lady Monarch field hockey team takes the turf again tomorrow against Penn State at 1:00 p.m. Old Dominion will be looking to avenge its 3-2 loss against the Lady Lions from last year's NCAA Final Four. Admission to the game is free.
