NORFOLK, VA -- Redshirt freshman Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT) helped the 12th-ranked Old Dominion University field hockey team snap a five-game losing streak, collecting six points on two goals and two assists, as the Lady Monarchs upset #8 Princeton, 8-2, in the regular season finale at Foreman Field.
Old Dominion used five different Lady Monarchs goal scorers in the victory as they improved to 10-9 overall heading into the CAA Tournament. The win also avenged an earlier 1-2 loss to Princeton back on October 19th in New Jersey. The Tigers dropped their second straight and fall to 11-5 on the 2003 season.
The Lady Monarchs took a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half. McLane netted back-to-back goals with a minute of each other to put Old Dominion up 2-0 with 26:30 left in the half. Midfielder Cora Gerardi (Frederica, DE), who was one of five Lady Monarch seniors honored prior to the game, added her first tally of the season and sophomore midfielder Chilly Banuelos (Escondido, CA) rounded out the scoring for Old Dominion in the first half.
Freshman midfielder Dana Sensing (Denver, PA) wasted no time putting the Lady Monarchs on the board in the second half drilling what would prove to be the eventual game-winner into the Tiger net less than a minute into the final half. Less than a minute later, Princeton thwarted the shutout as junior attack Lauren Quinn, off an assist from Natalie Martirosian, found the back of the Old Dominion net. Then at the 28:49 mark, Princeton tallied its second and final goal of the game off a penalty corner by junior midfielder Shahrad Joharifard.
From that point on, the Old Dominion defense held, while the Lady Monarch offense added three more goals. Sensenig and Banuelos each scored their second of the afternoon while senior midfielder Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) rounded out the scoring with 5:49 left to play.
Old Dominion senior netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) posted seven saves in the victory. Princeton's Allison Nemeth, who was a major key in stopping ODU's comeback in the first meeting of the year, made one save, while Juliana Simon took over duties in the second half, making three saves in goal.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Tigers, 15-8, and outcornered Princeton, 11-3.
Old Dominion returns to action at the 2003 CAA Field Hockey Tournament, which will be played at Foreman Field. The Lady Monarchs will face the No. 4 seed VCU in the tournament's first game at 12 p.m. on Nov. 7 followed by No. 2 seed William & Mary against No. 3 Delaware at 2:30 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1:00 p.m. Admission to all tournament games is free.
