NORFOLK, VA -- Wolverine senior forward April Fronzoni became the school's all-time leading scorer as fifth ranked Michigan won its 10th straight game, shutting out the ninth ranked Old Dominion field hockey team, 4-0, in chilly weather out at Foreman Field this evening.
The Wolverines improved to 14-3 overall and notched their ninth shutout of the 2003 season, while Old Dominion, who dropped their third straight game, fell to 10-7 on the year.
Michigan senior Kristi Gannon knocked in what would prove to be the game-winner off a penalty corner with 11:25 remaining in the first half, as the Wolverines held a slim 1-0 lead at the half.
However, in the second half, Michigan managed to reach the back of the Lady Monarch net three more times. Fronzoni's record setting goal ignited the Wolverines in the second half just minutes into the second stanza. With 32:37 left in the game, Fronzoni surpassed Mary Callam's (1976-79) record as she recorded career goal number 65.
Junior forward Anneke Huntzicker came off the bench for Michigan's third goal of the night with a rebound off a save by Old Dominion's Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) with just over 17 minutes remaining and junior forward Adrienne Hortillosa put away the Wolverine's fourth goal off a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the game.
The Wolverines outshot the Lady Monarchs 15-4 and both squads had seven penalty corners.
Walker posted seven saves in the loss for Old Dominion, while Michigan's Beth Riley made one save between the pipes. Riley now owns a 12-0 mark and has held her opponents scoreless in her last 336:29 of playing time.
The Lady Monarchs will look to return to the win column on Sunday when they travel to Richmond, VA to face Virginia Commonwealth in their final CAA match-up of the regular season. A victory will clinch the top seed for the Lady Monarchs at the 2003 CAA Championships and send the tournament host site to Foreman Field. The game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start at Cary Street Field.
