NORFOLK, VA -- The Penn State Lady Lions opened their 2003 campaign by handing the Old Dominion field hockey team a 6-2 loss at Foreman Field. It was the first Lady Monarch loss at Foreman Field since a 2-1 overtime setback to North Carolina in 1999.
Old Dominion (1-1) has not allowed an opponent to score five or more goals since the 2000 season when the Lady Monarchs lost to top ranked Maryland, 5-4, in double overtime. That would be the only loss the Lady Monarchs would collect that season en route to a 25-1 overall mark and their ninth national championship.
Penn State's Amanada Eckert got the game going early giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest. However, the lead would not last long as 16 seconds later senior tri-captain Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) tied the game at 1-1 with her first tally of the year. The Lady Lions did not take long to strike back and regain the lead for good this time off a Timarie Legel pass to Mary Schaefer with 30:13 left in the first half.
Legel, who finished the afternoon with six points on two goals and two assists, added in two unassisted tallied to give Penn State a 4-1 lead at the half.
Senior midfielder Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) converted a penalty stroke to pull the Lady Monarchs within two, 4-2, in the opening minutes of the second half, but Old Dominion would fail to score the rest of the way despite firing off 17 total shots in the game.
The Lady Lions added two more insurance goals in the second half of play. Eckert found the back of the Lady Monarch net with 26:17 remaining in the game for her second goal of the afternoon and Karin Garp, off a dribble from the top the circle from Legel on a penalty corner as the horn sounded, rounded out the Penn State scoring.
Old Dominion's Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) made five saves in between the pipes. Penn State's Annie Zinkavich recorded 11 saves in net for the Lady Lions.
Old Dominion outshot Penn State, 17-14, and outcornered the Lady Lions, 11-3.
Old Dominion will look to return to the win column next weekend when they host powerhouses Maryland on Saturday, September 6th and Stanford, Sunday, September 7th. Both games are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. and admission is free.
