NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion redshirt freshman Corrina Turner (Miami, FL) had her second double-double of the year and fourth of her young career, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, as the Lady Monarch women's basketball team defeated the Towson Tigers, 72-46, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Thursday night.
The win improves Old Dominion to 15-10 overall, 12-3 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and moves them a half game behind conference leader Delaware (13-3 CAA) and into a second place tie with UNC-Wilmington (12-3 CAA). The second place Seahawks will play the Hofstra Pride tomorrow night in Hempstead, NY. The loss drops Towson to 2-22 overall, 1-14 CAA.
Turner's lay-up 24 seconds into the first half was enough to get the Lady Monarchs rolling as they jumped out to a quick 16-4 lead, holding the Tigers to just one field goal in the first 7:08 of play. From there, Old Dominion never looked back. ODU ended the half on a 13-2 run taking a 39-13 lead into halftime.
The 13 points tied the fewest points allowed by an Old Dominion opponent in a half this season. Hofstra also netted just 13 points back on their first meeting with the Lady Monarchs as Old Dominion was up at the half, 32-13, back on January 26th at the Ted Convocation Center. The 13 points also tied Towson's record for the fewest points in a half this season. The Tigers scored just 13 at the half in their 39-64 loss to UNC-Wilmington on February 13th.
Turner nearly collected the double-double in the first half, leading all scorers with 10 points and nine rebounds in 15 minutes of play. Old Dominion held Towson to only 18.5 percent shooting (5-of-27) in the opening half. On the other hand, the Lady Monarchs shot 51.6 percent from the floor (16-of-31) and was also a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Both teams scored 33 points in the second half. The Lady Monarchs expanded their lead to as many as 31 points in the final stanza. Junior guard Marianthi Koukouvinou (Stockholm, Sweden) scored her two points to give Old Dominion a 61-28 edge with 9:23 remaining. Turner continued her dominance by adding nine more points and grabbing six rebounds.
Senior point guard Okeisha Howard (Virginia Beach, VA) and junior guard Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) also scored in double figures for the Lady Monarchs scoring 14 and 10 points respectively.
Towson's Kelli Talbot led the Tigers with 15 points including a 2-of-2 performance from behind the arc. Rookie Erin Gaston also scored in double figures coming off the bench to net 12.
Old Dominion finished the game shooting 50.9 percent, while the Tigers shot just 31.0 percent from the floor. The Lady Monarchs also outrebounded Towson, 48-23, their largest rebounding margin of the season.
The Lady Monarchs will be back in action for their regular season home finale this Sunday against William and Mary at 3:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports on channel 35.
Seniors guard Okeisha Howard, forward Kim Giddens, and manager Jessica Bowman will be honored in a senior day ceremony following the conclusion of Sunday's game.
