NORFOLK, VA -- Senior Becky Loy (Loysville, PA) tallied the lone goal of the second half to give the top ranked Lady Monarch field hockey team a 3-2 victory over #14 Princeton. The win improves Old Dominion to 16-3 overall, while the Tigers fall to 9-6 overall.

Princeton raced out to a 1-0 lead, controlling the opening push off and scoring 17 seconds into the contest. Senior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) pushed the ball into the circle setting up the goal by sophomore Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, VA). However, Old Dominion did not waste time and tied the game up quickly at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) converted her fifth penalty stroke attempt to tie the score. With 20 minutes remaining, the Lady Monarchs took a 2-1 lead as the nation's top scorer, junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), shot from the left hand corner on a penalty corner pass from Snow. Four minutes before the half, the Tigers tied the game at 2-2 as Friebe scored on a pass from sophomore Ashley Sennett (Albion, ME).

Becky Loy's game-winner came with nine minutes remaining in the game. Following a shot on a penalty corner from Snow, Loy jumped in front of the rebound off of Princeton keeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, MA) to send the ball into the right corner and give Old Dominion the win.

The Princeton offense outshot Old Dominion 16-113, but the Lady Monarchs managed to outcorner their opponent 9-7. Baril made 11 saves in goal for the Tigers while Old Dominion netminder senior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) finished the evening with 11 saves as well, one shy of her season-high.

The Lady Monarchs return to action tomorrow against #8 North Carolina. The game will be the annual scholarship game with the $5.00 admission to benefit field hockey scholarships at Old Dominion. Seniors Tiffany Snow, Becky Loy, Marybeth Freeman, Tara Herrmann, Katie Moyer, and Denita Acker will also be honored prior to the opening whistle.
