Junior Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) became Old Dominion's most prolific scorer on Saturday night when he notched his record breaking 37th career goal in double overtime to give the Monarchs a 2-1 victory over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe George Mason.
Vendegh took a pass through the Mason defense from Brian Kluckman (Springfield, VA) and lobbed a shot over goalie John O'Hara with only three minutes left in the game. He broke the record for most goals in a career, previously held by Sean Crowley, with his seventh tally of the season after posting 15 in each of his first two years. He also notched his sixth assist on the first goal of the match. Just seven minutes in the game he sent a long cross down the right side to Michael Goncalves (Alexandria, VA) who beat a defender and the goalie with a low shot to the right corner.
The Monarchs held that lead, largely thanks to several diving saves by Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC), until the 70:42 mark when the Patriots Mirza Kurspahic was able to get his body in front a goal kick and deflect into the net. The teams then played scoreless soccer until Vendegh's heriocs. O'Hara, one of the nation's best keepers, made five saves as ODU fired 15 shots, to GMU's 19.
ODU (5-4-0/2-0-0) will next go on the road for two conference games next weekend. They will take on newcomers Delaware on Friday and Towson on Sunday.
