BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (Nov. 17, 2000) -- The Old Dominion University sailing team will becompeting for their 12th national championship today when they begincompetition at the ICSA Sloop National Championships. The last time OldDominion captured the sloop national championship was 1992, when theMonarchs captured the title in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Monarch sloop squad advanced to the title round by virtue of asecond-place finish at the MAISA Championships on October 1. The sloopsquad will probably consist of senior All-American Adam Burns (Youngstown,NY), senior Justin Castagne (Trinidad, West Indies), Brock Callen (Martha'sVineyard, MA) and Ted Anderson (Norwalk, CT)?the team that competed at theMAISA Championship.
The Monarchs recently competed in two other championship competitionsthis fall?the ICSA men's and women's Singlehanded Championships in Seattle,WA. Brad Funk (Harbor Bluffs, FL) finished seventh in the competitionwhile fellow sailor Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI)took ninth.
