Cummings brings a wealth of tennis experience to Old Dominion University and has collected many honors in the past few years, including the only coach be awarded both the Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis Coach of the Year and the men's Coach of the Year.
Regionally, Cummings has been named Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year and Virginia Coach of the Year by the United State Professional Tennis Association.
Cummings holds certification by the USPTA and the USPTR and has taught, coached, or trained sectional, national, and world ranked players. Included in that group of players are Tzipi Obziler, the 1995 #1 ranked womens player, #15 regionally-ranked Miguel Rosa, the 1995 CAA Mens Player of the Year, and former ITA East Regional champion and four-time CAA Player of the Year Nataly Cahana.
Cummings is responsible for bringing the United States Tennis Association Area Training Center to Old Dominion and has served as the tournament director for the USTA Womens $10,000 Satellite Event in Norfolk. As a results of these successful tennis activities and Cummings hard work, Old Dominion received the 1993 Virginia Tennis Association Organization of the Year award.
As a player, Cummings is part of a rich and decorated history. At Old Dominion, he captured a doubles title in the Sun Belt Conference and a Virginia State singles title. He was a member of the 1985-86 Monarch team that set a school record for the most wins with a 20-3 mark.
Darryl is married to Julie Tupper Cummings, the former Senior Managing Editor for Tennis Week magazine and current account executive with Norfolks nationally-known printing company Teagle & Little. They have two sons, Clark Tupper and Connor Richard.
