Kieran Donohue is in his 13th year with the Old Dominion University Athletic Department and his second year as a member of the Athletics Administration and Old Dominion Athletic Foundation staff.  Donohue oversees ODU’s Sports Medicine Department, Women’s Golf program, Men’s Golf program and assists with the management of ODU’s annual giving operations. In December 2025, Donohue was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Administration & Development.

Donohue was promoted to the Athletic Director’s Senior Leadership Team in March of 2025. In May of 2024, following 27 years in Division I men’s basketball coaching, Donohue took on the role of Assistant to the Athletic Director and Athletic Development Officer.

Donohue spent 11 seasons on the men’s basketball coaching staff at ODU, serving as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the Monarch basketball team from 2014 – 2024.  Donohue also served as the Interim Head Coach for the team’s final 23 games following Jeff Jones’ medical leave in the 2023-24 season.
 
During his time at ODU, Donohue helped guide the Monarchs to the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the 2019 Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Championships, the 2016 post-season Vegas 16 Championship, the 2015 post-season NIT semifinals and a first ever Top 25 ranking in 2015. 

Other highlights from Donohue’s coaching tenure at ODU include: 2 C-USA Championship Game appearances (2016, 2019); 25-win seasons in 4 of 5 years (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019); first-year coaching staff led team to biggest turnaround in Division I with increase in wins from 2012-13 to 2013-14 (5 wins under previous staff to 18 wins); ten-year (2014-2023) record of 200-125 overall and 113-63 in conference play: (Sun Belt 11-7), (C-USA 102-56); 2nd most overall and conference wins in C-USA in 8-year span 2014-2021; Nine-year record of 181-123 and 102-56 in C-USA (2014-2022); most C-USA and overall road wins in C-USA in 8-year span 2014-2021; 1 C-USA Player of the Year, 1 C-USA Coach of the Year, 2 All-SBC Team selection, 8 All-C-USA Team selections, 4 C-USA All-Tournament Team selections, 1 C-USA Tournament MVP selection, 5 All-C-USA Defensive Team selections, 1 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, 2 C-USA Sixth-Persons of the Year, 4 All-C-USA Academic Team selections.

Prior to coming to ODU, Donohue spent 13 seasons at American University as the men’s basketball Associate Head Coach in 2012 and 2013, and as an Assistant Coach from 2001-2011.  Highlights from Donohue’s coaching tenure at American include:  2 Patriot League Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, 2009); 4 Patriot League regular season championships (2002, 2004, 2008, 2009); 5 Patriot League Championship Game appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009); recruited team that became 2014 Patriot League Tournament Champions and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1st year after departure; most conference and conference tournament wins of any PL school, 2008-2013;  20-win seasons in 4 of 5 years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012); overall record of 205-162 since joining the PL in 2001, with a 108-60 PL regular season record and an 18-10 PL Tournament record (2002-2013); 2 PL Players of the Year, 2 PL Rookies of the Year, 11 First-Team All-PL selections, 8 Second-Team All-PL selections, 14 PL All-Tournament Team selections; league leading 60 PL Academic Honor Roll selections; lead recruiter of 1 two-time First-Team All-PL selection, 1 three-time All-PL selection, 2 Second-Team All-PL selections, 4 starters on NCAA Tournament teams, 1 two-time PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year and 1 ESPN the Magazine / COSIDA District II Academic All-American First Team selection.

Before his tenure at American U., Donohue spent two seasons on the men’s basketball coaching staff at Boston University (1999, 2000) and one season on the men’s basketball coaching staff at the University of Virginia (1998). 
 
Donohue earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Virginia in 1997.  While a student at UVA, Donohue worked with the men’s basketball team as a student manager.  Donohue, a Bronxville, New York native, attended Regis High School in New York City, where he played point guard on the 1993 championship team and 1992 runners-up for the New York State Class C title.
 
Donohue and his wife, Erika, have two daughters, Molly and Nora.
