Field Hockey Ninth In Latest STX/NFHCA Poll

Sept. 4, 2007

NORFOLK, Va. -- After begining the season 1-2 facing teams in the preseason top ten, the Old Dominion field hockey team was ranked ninth in the STX/NFHCA Poll and 13th in the Women's Field Hockey.Com Poll released on Tuesday.

More ranked opponents are coming the Lady Monarchs' way this weekend as they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face No. 15/12 Michigan on Friday, September 7th and No. 3/5 Connecticut in a neutral site contest on Saturday, September 8th.

In the STX/NFHCA Poll, Maryland still tops the list followed by future ODU opponents North Carolina at No. 2, and Connecticut at No. 3. Penn State, who Old Dominion fell to 3-1 in the season opener, moved up to No. 6. Another future top ten opponent includes Duke, now at No. 8 on the list.

Also featured in the STX/NFHCA poll are two CAA rivals. James Madison continues to be ranked in the poll coming in at No. 11 this week after starting the season 2-1. The lone Duke loss was a 2-1 setback to No. 2 North Carolina, who managed to score the game-winning goal in the contest's final minute of action. Delaware, who has started the season at 4-0, jumped into the top 20 this week at No. 17.

Upcoming opponent Michigan checks in at No. 15, while Virginia, who the Lady Monarchs defeated 3-1 for their first win of the 2007 campaign, fell out of the top ten to No. 14.

Also receiving votes are four other CAA schools - William & Mary, Northeastern, Drexel, and Hofstra.

In the first Women's Field Hockey.com poll of the 2007 season, the top two positions mirror the STX/NFHCA poll with the Terps topping the list followed by the Tar Heels at No. 3. Also in the top 10 are Connecticut at No. 5, Penn State at No. 6, Duke at No. 9, and James Madison coming in at No. 10.

Other ODU opponents listed in the poll include No. 12 Michigan, No. 14 Virginia, and No. 15 Delaware.

The next polls will be released on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll and the Women's Field Hockey.com Poll have no bearing on selection to the 2007 NCAA Division I Championship field.
