NORFOLK, Va. -- Following its 3-0 start to the 2006 season, the Old Dominion field hockey team moved up one spot in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Coaches' Poll to No. 3.
The Lady Monarchs (3-1) are coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to No. 1 and defending national champion Maryland and will host No. 19 Richmond and No. 20 Michigan this weekend. The Spiders will serve as the 2006 home opener at Foreman Field on Saturday at 3:00 p.m, while the Wolverines meet ODU on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
The 3-0 start to Lady Monarchs' season is the team's best start since the 2002 season, which saw Old Dominion reach the Final Four.
Maryland remained in the top spot, followed Wake Forest. Duke slipped a notch to No. 4, while North Carolina remained at No. 5.
In all 10 Lady Monarch opponents appear in this week's poll including three members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). James Madison moved up to No. 13 in the poll, followed by William & Mary returning to the top 20 at No. 17, and Northeastern fell a few spots back to No. 18. Additionally four CAA teams received votes in this week's poll.
In the Women's Field Hockey.com poll released on Monday, the Lady Monarchs remained at No. 5. Maryland also topped that poll as well, followed by Duke and North Carolina. Upcoming opponent Richmond was ranked at No. 20, while Michigan was not featured in the Top 20.
