NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion women's basketball head coach Wendy Larry has announced the resignation of assistant coach Susan Montgomery.
"Susan's loyalty, commitment, and contributions to the Lady Monarch basketball program during her tenure have been outstanding," said Larry. "She has developed tremendous relationships with many of us in the ODU community and she will be sorely missed."
Montgomery spent five seasons on the sidelines with the Old Dominion women's basketball team joining the Lady Monarchs for the 2001-02 season. During her tenure she helped the Lady Monarchs to a 118-42 record and five straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2002's run to the Elite Eight.
"At this point in my life I feel it is best for me to step away from the time commitmentof collegiate coaching to spend more time with my family," said Montgomery. "I am most appreciative to Old Dominion University for allowing me the opportunity to follow a dream of not only coaching one of the nations best women's basketball programs, but also playing in front of the greatest fans in the country! My plans are to stay in the area and pursue a career in real estate or possibly return to my roots as a classroom teacher. The friendships I've developed along with the many memories from the last five years are something I will treasure and keep with me forever."
Prior to joining the Old Dominion staff, Montgomery spent four years as an assistant at Georgia State and also served as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida and the head coach at Kennesaw State in Marietta, Georgia. Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Montgomery served as a high school coach in Valdosta, GA, from 1986-91, where she first began her association with Old Dominion. Two of her former players donned the Blue and Silver for the Lady Monarchs, Cassandra Twine (1990-92) and the late Esther Benjamin (1993-96).
