NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion's Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) and Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, Pa.) were named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District women's at-large team. Standouts on the field hockey team which reached the 2005 Final Four, both earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages in their respective majors.
Janelle Engle was the CAA Player of the Year and earned first team All-American honors by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Named the 2005-06 ODU Female Athlete of the Year by the alumni association and the Tom Scott Award winner as ODU's top senior athlete by the Norfolk Sports Club, Engle led ODU and the CAA with 20 goals. In the classroom, Engle was a four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic selection and was chosen as a USA TODAY All-USA College Academic team nominee. A music major, Engle was first violinist in the Deihn String Quartet and concertmaster of the ODU Symphony.
Mary Cate Gordon and her teammate Engle shared the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athlete of the Year as the top female senior athletes with the highest cumulative grade point averages. In the net, Gordon posted seven shutouts along with a .702 save percentage and 1.47 goal against average in leading ODU to the CAA crown and its 16th appearance in the NCAA semi-finals. Gordon, an English major, was a four-time NFHCA All-Academic selection and was a Rhodes Scholar nominee who will go on to law school in the fall.
Both Engle and Gordon will advance to the national ballot.
