Recapping Friday's Quarterfinals:
In a competitive first round of action in the CAA field hockey tournament, Hofstra and William & Mary won their opening matchups this afternoon to move on to Saturday's semifinals at Foreman Field.
In the early game, fifth-seeded William & Mary knocked off fourth-seeded James Madison in a closely contested match by a score of 1-0. Senior Carly Falgowski scored the lone goal of the game with 21 minutes remaining in the first half when she fired a shot during a penalty corner. JMU goalkeeper Lori Amico, who made four saves in the game, was able to deflect the initial attack, but Falgowski retrieved it on the rebound and put it in the net to clinch the Tribe's first postseason victory since 2002.
On the defensive end, W&M sophomore goalkeeper Gwen Hunter made three saves to record her league-high seventh shutout of the season. The Tribe (10-10) outshot JMU 11-4 and will move on to face top-seeded Old Dominion on Saturday at noon. The Dukes' record falls to 11-9, which is a dramatic improvement over their 4-16 mark from a year ago, and they should build upon that even more in 2006 with their talented, young roster. In the second game of the afternoon, third-seeded Hofstra advanced to the semis with a 4-1 defeat of sixth-seeded Towson. Hofstra (13-6) received an outstanding performance from freshman Charlia Warner, who tallied her first-career hat trick by scoring her seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the season.
Warner kicked off her career day when she put home a rebound during a penalty corner about 21 minutes into the game. She added another just before halftime to give the Pride a 2-0 advantage when she poked in an attempt from the stick of Leslie DeSimone.
Towson (9-10) made things interesting 10 minutes into the second half, as sophomore Gabby Mink knocked in a rebound from a Jess Auge shot to cut the lead to one, but Warner would have no part of it. The CAA All-Rookie team member notched her third of the day just six minutes later to swing the momentum back to the Pride. Fellow freshman Kristin Griffiths put another one in for good measure with 1:30 remaining to make the final score 4-1.
Hofstra will take on second-seeded Northeastern at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Tigers, which received a valiant effort from junior goalkeeper Christina Armer (15 saves), will head home with an early exit but also with their third-best record in school history and a conference-win total that equaled their total from the previous three seasons combined.
