NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion's 7th ranked men's soccer team piled up the accolades at the CAA Tournament Banquet on Thursday night. Senior forward Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) was named the CAA Player of the Year, freshman midfielder Trevor Banks was recognized as the CAA Rookie of the Year, and head coach Alan Dawson is the CAA Coach of the Year for the fourth time. In addition, four Monarchs were named to the All-CAA 1st team, one to the 2nd team, and two were appointed to the All-CAA Rookie team.
Cvilikas, who was named to the All-CAA 2nd team the past two seasons, leads the conference in goals (14), points (28), and several other statistical categories. The Colorado native turned in 5 multi-goal performances, including a two-goal performance in a 3-0 victory over then #4 Virginia. His 31 career goals have him tied for 4th on ODU's all-time career goals scored list. Cvilikas being named CAA Player of the Year is the third time in six years that a Monarch has earned the honor. ODU great Attila Vendegh took home the award in 2001 and 2002.
Banks is the first Monarch to be named Rookie of the Year since Vendegh was honored as such in 2000. The midfielder has started 17 of 18 contests this season and has been a clutch player for the team all year. Banks ranks 2nd on the team in goals (6) and points (15). He is also tied for the team lead with three game-winners, having accounted for the winning goal against N.C. State, Delaware, and Northeastern. In his collegiate debut against N.C. State, the freshman scored both goals in the ODU 2-1 triumph.
Head Coach Alan Dawson was named the CAA Coach of the Year for the fourth time in seven seasons, also winning it in 1999, 2001, and 2003. Dawson's Monarchs currently sport a 14-2-2 (9-1-1) record, and the team's last victory against William & Mary marked Dawson's 100th victory as ODU head coach. Heading into Friday night's CAA semifinal contest UNC-Wilmington, his team has only given up 10 goals in 18 games, posted 12 shutouts which ranks 3rd nationally, and maintains a 0.54 team goals against average which is good for 7th in the country.
Cvilikas, junior forward Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY), senior goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD), and senior defender Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA) were all named to the All-CAA 1st team. For McEachron, who made a completely successful comeback from a knee injury that was thought to be career ending, this is his 3rd appearance on the first team. McEachron helped anchor a Monarch defense that has only allowed ten goals in 2005. Elcock scored five goals and 12 points for ODU this season to make his initial appearance on the 1st team. Connelly leads the CAA in individual shutouts (11) and goals against average (0.55).
Sophomore defender David Horst (Pine Grove, PA) was named to the All-CAA 2nd team to follow up a rookie campaign that netted him an All-CAA rookie team honor. Horst is one half of a formidable duo with first-teamer McEachron on ODU's backline. He has made many superb defensive stops that have helped allow the Monarchs to boast a 3rd ranked shutout percentage.
Yomby William (Bafoussam, Cameroon), a sophomore defender who suffered a season-ending knee injury in October, was recognized alongside teammate Trevor Banks as a member of the All-CAA rookie team. Before he suffered the knee injury in practice, William was developing into one of the most consistent and able defenders in the conference. Yomby also scored his first career goal during a 3-0 shutout win over Davidson.
Top-seeded Old Dominion hosts No. 5 seed UNC-Wilmington Friday night at 7:00 p.m in a CAA semifinal tournament contest.
