NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team begins its quest for its record setting 13th straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title as the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament comes to the Ted Constant Convocation Center March 10 - 13.
Not until the final regular season game was complete, were the pairings for the 2004 CAA Women's Basketball Championship finalized. With UNC Wilmington's 65-61 victory over Hofstra Friday night, the CAA standings were left with a tie for second place between the Pride and George Mason at 11-7 in league play, a three-way tie for fourth place between the Seahawks, Delaware and VCU, who all tote a 10-8 CAA mark, while Drexel and James Madison were already locked into a seventh-place tie heading into the final night of the regular season.
Old Dominion, the tournament host, earned the top seed after compiling a 17-1 conference mark. Based on conference tie-breaking procedures, George Mason will be seeded second, while Hofstra is in the third spot, after the Patriots two head-to-head regular-season victories over the Pride. The three-way tie for fourth place shakes out with Delaware seeded fourth, UNC Wilmington seeded fifth and VCU seeded sixth. Madison earns the tie-breaker over Drexel for the seventh spot, followed by the Dragons, ninth-seeded William and Mary and 10th-seeded Towson.
The 2004 CAA Women's Basketball Championship tips off Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion, as #7 James Madison faces #10 Towson at 5 p.m., followed by #8 Drexel versus #9 William & Mary at 7:30 p.m. Quarterfinal action begins at noon on Thursday as #2 George Mason faces the winner of the JMU-Towson first-round game at noon, followed by #3 Hofstra against #6 VCU with a 2:30 p.m. tip-off time. At 5 p.m., #4 Delaware squares off against #5 UNC Wilmington, while the top-seeded Lady Monarchs will face the winner of the Drexel-William & Mary first-round contest at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals are set for 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game at 12 noon on Saturday, March 13. The final game can be seen live on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Fox Sports South, Fox-New York and Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, while KTVS in Albuquerque, N.M. will show a tape-delayed broadcast of the championship at 1 p.m.
Single session adult reserved tickets are $13, children's single session tickets are $9, while senior citizens, military and groups of 10 or more can purchase single session tickets for $7. Student tickets are available for $5 per session with a valid student ID from a CAA institution. Tournament books for all four sessions are available for $25.
