New Faces...Same Tradition: 2003 Field Hockey Outlook

Oct. 7, 2003

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion University field hockey team remained at the number seven spot in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches' Poll for the third straight week. The Lady Monarchs improved to 8-4 this weekend after defeating Hofstra (2-0) and Drexel (3-1) in conference play.

The Top 10 remained unchanged from last week. Undefeated Wake Forest (11-0) continues to claim the top spot with 26 first place votes. North Carolina (11-1) remained in second, followed by Maryland (12-1), Duke (9-2), and Michigan (8-3).

Three CAA teams crack this week's Top 20. Along with the Lady Monarchs, Delaware (10-2) remained in the Top 20, moving up one place to No. 11. William & Mary returned to the Top 20 at No. 19 after receiving votes the last two weeks. The Hofstra Pride, who Old Dominion defeated 2-0 on Friday night, once again received votes in this week's poll.

Eleven of Old Dominion's opponents are ranked in this week's version of the coaches' poll. Still on the schedule for the Lady Monarchs are #5 Michigan, #10 Princeton, #11 Delaware, and rematches with #2 North Carolina and #3 Maryland.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, October 14, 2003. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2003 NCAA Division I Championship field.

The Lady Monarchs return home for the first time in six games this weekend hosting Towson and #11 Delaware at Foreman Field for the first time in each school's history. Old Dominion welcomes the Tigers on Friday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m. and the Fightin' Blue Hens on Sunday, October 12th at 1:00 p.m. Admission to both games are free.
