ABOUT THE OPPONENT:

Michigan: The Wolverines enter this weekend's action with victories in 13of their last 14 outings, including a season-high nine-game winning streak. Six of the Wolverine's games in thenine-game win streak have been shutouts.Michigan will be playing its final non-conference game of the year andenter Friday's game with a 9-3 non-conference record, including a 4-1 mark onthe road. Freshman goalkeeper Beth Riley,who has started each of the Wolverines' last nine contests, continues to post aperfect record on the season and owns an 11-0 mark entering this weekend'saction. Riley ranks second in the nation and leads the Big Ten with a 0.60goals-against average and has held opponents scoreless in her last 266:29 ofplaying time. April Fronzoni, whoscored two of the Wolverines goals in last season's match-up including the goalthat sent the game in overtime, leads the team on the offense. The senior forward has 37 points on 16 goaland five assists, which ranks her sixth in scoring in the country. Second leading scorer junior midfielder JessicaBlake checks in with eight goals, six assists, and 22 points.

Virginia Commonwealth: The Rams are on their longest winning streak since the 1992season having won four straight games.VCU will host William & Mary before welcoming the Lady Monarchs toRichmond. Entering the weekend, theRams own a 9-6 overall mark and sit in third place with a 3-1 conferencerecord. VCU rolled to a 9-1 victoryover St. Francis (PA) and a 4-1 win over Rhode Island last week. CAA Player of the Week Karlijn Jansen set aCAA single-game season high with four goal sand nine points in the Rams' routeof St. Francis. Jansen, a freshmanmidfielder, is the squad's second leading scorer with 14 points off of fourgoals and six assists. Seniormidfielder Jennifer Howard, a Va. Beach native from Kellam H.S., leads the teamwith 13 goals and two assists for 28 points, ranking second in the CAA inscoring. Netminder Abby Stiles, asenior from Kempsville H.S. in Va. Beach, continues to be the last line ofdefense for the Rams. Currently, she isposting a 1.69 goals against average and a .753 save percentage, ranking thirdin the CAA in both categories.

THE RANKED ROAD AHEAD:

TheLady Monarch field hockey team has just four games left in the 2003 regularseason and of those four, three opponents are ranked in this week's Top10. Old Dominion hosts #5 Michigan onFriday and then travels to Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday to wrap up CAAregular season play. Although the Ramsare not ranked in the STX/NFHCA poll, they did receive votes this week. Also left on the schedule are rematches with#4 North Carolina and #8 Princeton.

SISTER, SISTER:

ErikaBanuelos, a senior defender with the Wolverines, is the older sister of LadyMonarch midfielder Chilly Banuelos. Erikahas seen action in four games this season, including a start against top rankedWake Forest in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in early September. However, Erika has been sidelined with aninjury since Michigan's 6-0 victory over Ohio.Erika and Chilly have one other sister who also plays field hockey. Middle sister Dalinda is a junior at BostonUniversity.

ONE TO CLINCH:

Avictory on Sunday against the VCU Rams will give the Lady Monarchs a perfectCAA regular season for the eighth straight year and place the CAA Championshipsat Foreman Field once again. The topfour teams at the close of regular season play will advance to the conferencetournament.

ANOTHER LADY MONARCH ON THE SIDELINES:

Virginia Commonwealth head coach Shelly Behrens is aformer Lady Monarch. A 1988 graduate ofOld Dominion University, Behrens was a four-year starter at goalkeeper for theMonarchs and received first team All-South Region honors in 1986 and 1987. Shewas a member of ODU's 1984 national championship team and the 1985 squad, whichreached the finals of the NCAA Championship.Behrens served four seasons as the head field hockey coach for VCU'scrosstown rival, the University of Richmond, from 1997 to 2000. She compiled a30-54 overall record at Richmond and twice led the Spiders to the semifinals ofthe Colonial Athletic Association tournament during her tenure. She has also been heavily involved with theUnited States' National Field Hockey Team and was as an assistant coach for theU.S. squad which earned a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games as wellas the 2000 and 2001 national teams. Before becoming the head coach atRichmond, Behrens was a Division I assistant for eight seasons and participatedin the NCAA tournament three times as a coach, including the 1990 Penn Stateteam, which reached the Final Four.

The Lady Monarchs have not lost a CAA contest sincea 1-2 loss to James Madison in the championship game of the 1995 CAATournament. Since then, Old Dominionhas won 44 regular season games and 14 CAA Tournament games for a grand totalof 58 consecutive conference wins.

The Lady Monarchs began the CAA schedule outscoringtheir opponents 12-0, before the Drexel Dragons finally got one into the pipesOctober 5th. Old Dominion prevailedwith a 3-1 outcome and are outscoring their conferences rivals 30-6 thus far.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Angie Loy (September 15^th):

Loy helped lead the Lady Monarchs to a pair of winover nationally ranked opponents, which included a 3-0 shutout in the CAAopening win over William & Mary and a 4-2 victory over #10 Connecticut. Loytotaled three goals and two assists on the week. She had a hand in all three ofthe Lady Monarchs goals against the Tribe, scoring two and assisting on the other.Defensively, Loy helped Old Dominion to their first shutout of the 2003 season.Again the 10th-ranked Huskies, Loy registered a goal and assist.

Anna Rogers (September 26^th):

Rogers piled up nine points on the weekend on four goalsand two assists on two games. Shetallied two goals, including the game-winner, and had an assist in leading OldDominion to its 4-1 victory over the 12^th ranked Virginia Cavaliersand also scored a pair of goals in the Lady Monarchs' second shutout win of theyear, a 5-0 win over the James Madison Dukes. In eight games before theweekend, Rogers had just one goal on the season.

ANGIELOY (October 13th):

Loyadded to her league-leading point total collecting seven points in two LadyMonarchs' victories. Loy was one of nine different goal scorers in ODU's 11-0victory over Towson and added a goal and three assists in the Lady Monarchs'thrilling 6-5 overtime win over #11 Delaware. Loy found CAA Rookie of the Week in the first extra session forthe game-winning assist that extended ODU's CAA winning streak to 58 games.

RACHELDAUBERT (October 13th):

Daubert knocked in the game-winninggoal with 12.9 seconds remaining in the first overtime period in the LadyMonarchs' 6-5 overtime win over #11 Delaware. Daubert's goal stretched OldDominion's winning streak to six games and extended its CAA win streak to 58games. In the Lady Monarchs' 11-0 win over Towson, Daubert scored two goals,the first two of her collegiate career, and was one of nine different LadyMonarchs to score in the game.
