Senior midfielder Angie Loy dropped by odusports.com to give fans an insight on her experiences as both a Lady Monarch and a student. Last season as a junior, she was named First Team All-American and as well as a First Team All-South Region, First Team All-CAA. Additionally she is a three-time Acadmeic All-American selection. This season she currently leads the team in scoring and is one pace to become one of the all-time leaders in points, goals, and assists.
What did you do over your summer break?
The three main things I did over my summer break were work field hockey camps, take two summer classes at Old Dominion, and helped my family on their dairy farm back in Loysville, PA. I worked a bunch of camps, must have been over five camps including the ODU camps here with various high school students and hopefully some future Lady Monarchs. I took a literature course and a health class, which goes toward my major (Heath & Physical Education), in between working camps over Foreman Field. In between working camps and class I would go home to the dairy farm. My parents usually get up around 3:30 every morning to do the milking before I get up at around 7:30 to help with the daily chores. Sometimes I get up at that early hour to help my parents out, but I usually don't like to get up that early. I'm not that bad in the mornings and I don't mind helping them out.
Is your hometown named after one of your relatives?
Yes my hometown, Loysville, in Pennsylvania is named after my family. It was named sometime back in 1700's after a Michael Loy a really, really, really, really distant cousin. The town is about 45 minutes west of Harrisburg with between 200 and 300 people living there.
What is a typical day like for you?>
On a typical day, I'm usually in class in the mornings, then have practice in the afternoons. After practice I usually go home, shower, eat, and then do my homework.
What can you be found doing on one of your days off?
Monday's are usually our day off and then you can find me in class, doing laundry, catching-up on my school, or just relaxing.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I'll be graduating in May with a degree in Health and Physical Education. I'm hoping to either teach or possibly get a job coaching, field hockey hopefully! There is also a chance that I might try out for the U.S. National Team.
How did you start playing field hockey?
I started playing field hockey when I was in the seventh grade. I kind of followed in my older sister Becky's (former Lady Monarch 1998-2001) footsteps. We had played soccer when we were younger, but when we got to middle school the only soccer programs were for boys. In middle school I had coach that had just graduated from Lockhaven University and she heavily influenced me to be involved with the program. I was good at it and just continued to play.
What can ODU fans expect from the team this season?
This is season is going to be different than other seasons because we are so young. We only have three seniors, including me, on this year's team. We may be young, but we are still a strong team. Everyday and every game is going to be different. One day it might be a freshman stepping up, another day it might be an upperclassman who comes through for us. Different people are going to step-up on different days, so other teams need to watch out.
What are your goals for this season?
As a team, we want to win the CAA championship again and get that automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Getting to the Final Four again would be the ultimate goal.
Why did choose to come to ODU?
My sister Becky was already here so I knew a lot about the program at Old Dominion. Also, Beth Anders, the head coach was here and I knew she was a really good coach.
Who is the most impressive person you have ever met?
Beth Anders...She has taught me so much about the game of field hockey itself and how the game is not just hitting ball, but working it the whole way down the field and working together as a team.
What is your most memorable moment as a Lady Monarch?
My most memorable moment I would say is winning the Final Four in 2000. Last year was big too because I got to go to a new state for the Final Four.
