Vendegh Named to Two Soccer Organization's National Teams

Oct. 2, 2002

Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) racked up more awards on Wednesday when he was named to the Soccer America and College Soccer News National Teams of the Week (week ending Sept. 29) for his three-goal performance against UNC-Wilmington on Saturday.

Vendegh led the Monarchs (4-2/1-0) with a first half trick against the Seahawks in ODU's CAA opener. He netted all three goals in a four-minute span and his third score of the match gave him 36 goals as a Monarch, tied for the ODU career record. He also added an assist in the game to give him seven points, the most recorded by a CAA player in a game this season. The junior scored 15 goals in each of his first two years and now has six in 2002.

Vendegh had already been named CAA Player of the Week on Monday, after his seven points against UNCW moved into the lead in the CAA with 2.5 points a game. The 2001 CAA Player of the Year also finds himself among the South Atlantic Region statistical leaders. He is currently tied for sixth in the region with 15 points and tied for third with six goals.

This weekend the Monarchs travel to take on nationally ranked St. John's and Rutgers in the Rutgers Tournament. St. Johns (7-1-1) moved to number one in the nation this week and Rutgers (3-2-2) is now ranked 13th. They represent two of the five ranked opponents ODU faces this season. They are 1-1 against those teams so far after losing to then ranked #22 Wake Forest 2-1, before dropping #12 American 3-2 in overtime. The 19th ranked UCLA Bruins (5-1-0) will also be in action this weekend at the Rutgers Tournament.
