Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week for Sept. 23-29 for his heroics in Old Dominion's 5-0 shutout victory over UNC-Wilmington on Saturday night.
Vendegh led the Monarchs (4-2/1-0) with a first half trick against the Seahawks in ODU's CAA opener. His third score of the match gave him 36 goals as a Monarch, tied for the ODU career record. He also added an assist in the game to give him seven points, the most recorded by a CAA player in a game this season. The junior scored 15 goals in each of his first two years and now has six in 2002.
The 2001 CAA Player of the Year also finds himself among the South Atlantic Region statistical leaders and is the CAA scoring leader with 2.5 points a game. He is currently tied for sixth with 15 points and tied for third with six goals in the region. Teammate Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) has totaled four assists in six games so far this year, good enough for a tie for ninth. Also, Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC) is ranked ninth among goalkeepers after allowing only four goals in three games. Cameron is coming off his best game of the year after stopping seven shots and earning his first 2002 shutout in the victory over UNCW.
This weekend the Monarchs travel to take on nationally ranked St. John's and Rutgers in the Rutgers Tournament. St. Johns (#2) and Rutgers (#19) represent two of the five ranked opponents ODU faces this weekend. They are 1-1 so far after losing to Wake Forest 2-1, before dropping American 3-2.
